OPTimize Research Abstracts


Submit a research abstract proposal for presentation at OPTimize 2019, which is being held on Friday, September 27. Share your clinical or basic science investigation, special interest paper or case study with your physical therapy colleagues. All abstracts are peer-reviewed and the three top scoring abstracts will be chosen as platform presentations. NEW submission deadline: Friday, May 31.  Due to the holiday weekend, the deadline to submit your proposal has been extended. 


Accepted research abstracts will be assigned one of two formats - Poster or Platform. If your proposal is accepted, you will display a POSTER at OPTimize. The three top scoring abstracts will be selected for a PLATFORM presentation.

  • POSTER: A POSTER is a written display in which information is summarized using brief written statements and graphic materials, such as photographs, charts, graphs, and/or diagrams mounted on a four foot high by six foot wide poster board. (Poster boards are free standing cork boards that accept push pins. Poster boards will be provided by the OPTA).  Posters will be on display for the entire day of OPTimizepresenters will attend their poster during lunch to answer questions from OPTimize attendees. Posters should be set up no later than 8 a.m. on Friday, September 27.
  • PLATFORM:  A PLATFORM PRESENTATION is a 20-minute oral presentation to the audience by an individual or group, with 15 minutes devoted to the presentation and an additional five minutes reserved for audience questions, input and discussion. There is not a separate submission for platform presentation; the top three scoring abstract submissions will be offered platform presentations.  Preference will be given to those abstracts relating to the OPTimize theme. Platforms will be presented during unopposed time during OPTimize on Friday, September 27.

Physical therapy topics.  Does not need to be related to the OPTimize MOVEment Research Short topic, but preference will be given to those abstracts relating to the conference topic.

Abstract submissions are being accepted in the following three categories:

●   Research Report: Research reports are presentations of original scientific data collected by the author(s). Any established research format, both experimental and non-experimental designs, may be used. Scientific research requires the design of a study, collection of samples, measurement of variables, analysis of data, and presentation of the results. The body of the abstract must include:

o    Purpose and Significance

o    Subjects and Methods

o    Data Analysis/ Results (statistical tests if appropriate)  

o    Conclusions

o    Scientific/Clinical Merit

o    Bibliography of 5-10 references published within the last 10 years (new requirement for 2019)

●   Special Interest Report: Special interest reports are presentations of unique and innovative concepts, ideas, devices, or products developed to meet the special needs of physical therapy. Emphasis should be on the unique and innovative nature of the concept or idea presented. All reports must contain data or evaluative information either collected or developed by the author(s) that address the idea, concept, device, or product presented. Reports that are limited to a “proposed” idea, concept, device, or product are not appropriate for submission and will not be allowed for presentation. The body of the abstract must include:

o    Purpose

o    Support and Rationale

o    Description (methods and materials)

o    Observations

o    Scientific/Clinical Merit

o    Bibliography of 5-10 references published within the last 10 years (new requirement for 2019)


●   Case Study Report: Case studies describe an individual patient, uncommon clinical case or a new or improved method of management or treatment. The body of the abstract must include:

o    Purpose

o    Case description

o    Outcomes/Discussion

o    Conclusions

o    Scientific/Clinical merit

o    Bibliography of 5-10 references published within the last 10 years (new requirement for 2019)



Only current APTA/OPTA members will be invited to present at OPTimize.  The lead author must be a current APTA/OPTA member; project researchers do not need to be APTA/OPTA members.

General Information: Abstracts must be typed in Word format, single-spaced, using a 12-point font (please review this sample abstract) and should adhere to "people-first" language. The total length of the body of the abstract should not exceed 400 words. Documents should start with the title of the presentation followed by the first and last names and designations of the authors. The next line should include the name and location of the institution or organization where the research was conducted, followed by contact information (email and phone number) for the lead author.

If the material has been (within the last 18 months) or will be (in the next 12 months) presented at a meeting/conference, indicate the meeting name, date and location at the end of your abstract.  There must be no identifiable facility information in the body of the abstract.  If applicable, note any funding source.

NEW requirement for 2019 abstracts:  A bibliography of at least five works (and no more than 10) published within the past 10 years (written in AMA format) are to be included.  Bibliography does not count towards the 400 word limit.

FOR CONTACT PURPOSES, INCLUDE THE NAME, EMAIL ADDRESS, AND PHONE NUMBER OF THE LEAD AUTHOR (or designated contact person). The lead author/designated contact person cannot be a student.

We have contacted the APTA and have been informed that there is no prohibition on submitting an abstract for, and being selected as a presenter at, both OPTimize 2019 and CSM 2020. 

All abstracts must be submitted by Friday, May 31Due to the holiday weekend, the deadline to submit your proposal has been extended. 



Abstracts will be peer-reviewed and scored during the month of June. A letter indicating whether or not an abstract has been accepted for presentation will be sent out via email to the lead author/designated contact person by July 12. The three top scoring abstracts will be selected as 20-minute platform presentations.
