We would like to introduce you to our April Member of the Month, Heather Schradin. Heather was nominated by her peer, Becky Parr. The Member of the Month initiative is a peer-to-peer nomination where members who have gone above and beyond in their profession and the association, will be acknowledged for their contributions. Heather was selected as Member of the Month for her willingness to exercise her leadership skills on both a state and national level and fulfilled responsibilities beyond her regular professional duties. We had a moment to speak with Heather and ask her what she has found most valuable about her membership within the OPTA and how other members can get more involved. Take a moment to learn more about her experience within the association.

Q: How has being a member of the OPTA helped you to grow in your profession?

A: Being a member of the OPTA has allowed me to meet amazing people in our field that live in my back yard. Being a young professional, the OPTA has connected me with many well experienced PT’s. I am able to look up to these professionals for advice when navigating the job market or treating complex patients. Every year the annual conference inspires me to continue to learn new things and branch out into new areas I am less comfortable with.

Q: What do you find most valuable about your OPTA Membership?

A:To put it simply, staying connected. The OPTA allows me to stay up to date with the newest legislation/regulations, research, reimbursement and social engagements in respect to physical therapy.

Q: How can a member become more involved with the OPTA on a state or district level?

A: I feel the options are endless and it depends on how much time and commitment you have to give. Everyone’s contribution helps to build a strong base for our profession to grow. Within your community participating in district meetings and planning local events can have immediate impact.  While on a state level, running for a position within the OPTA will give you a voice regarding the future of your profession. We are always looking for new faces and fresh ideas to participate in the OPTA.  As the state PAC chair I welcome the opportunity to get OPTA members involved as advocates for our profession and raise PAC dollars in support of important legislation.
